How to Change the Oil for an A15VSO Hydraulic Pump

Inspect the oil filter and look for oil leaks. If the oil is contaminated or if there are any leaks, fix them before changing the pump's oil.

To change the oil on an A15VSO hydraulic pump, you will need to:

Inspect the oil filter and look for oil leaks. If the oil is contaminated or if there are any leaks, fix them before changing the pump's oil.

Drain the oil from your hydraulic pump by removing the drain plug.

Wear safety goggles when handling this part of your vehicle because it can be dangerous.

Remove any dirt or debris from inside of your hydraulic pump using a rag or brush. This will help prevent contamination during reassembly.

Add new motor oil to your hydraulic pump until it reaches full capacity. Make sure that you use the same type of oil that came with your vehicle when it was new.

Remove the two screws holding the two halves of the oil filter housing together. Remove one half at a time by pulling it straight off and letting the lubricant drain into a suitable container.

Remove the oil filter housing cover by unscrewing it and letting it fall off. The filter element is located inside this housing, so be careful not to damage it.

Use a socket wrench to remove the large nut that holds on the end of the hydraulic pump shaft. This nut may be difficult to turn due to corrosion or lack of lubrication, so use caution when removing it.

Remove all of the old grease and oil from around the inside of your engine with a rag or vacuum cleaner before replacing your new pump with your old one. If you have trouble finding where all of the old grease is located, use a UV light or other identifying tool such as an infrared thermometer to locate any hot spots where leaks might be occurring.

Remove both halves of the filter housing and replace with an identical new filter housing.

The Rexroth A15VSO hydraulic pump is used on many different Volvo trucks. The most common replacement parts are the filter housing and the filter element. Changing these parts is a simple process that can be done by any do-it-yourselfer with basic tools.

Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using pliers or another tool. Allow 30 minutes for the battery to discharge before proceeding with any electrical work.

Step 2: Remove both halves of the filter housing and replace with an identical new filter housing. The location of this housing varies slightly depending on which truck you have, but it is usually located beneath one of the wheels on either side of the vehicle.

Step 3: Install a new oil filter element into its housing. This can be done by hand, but it may take some effort due to its tight fit into place. If necessary, use a rubber mallet to install it properly into place so that no leaks occur during operation.
