TEETH WHITENING

As time goes on, you may find that your pearly whites aren’t as bright as they once were. That’s because, as we consume foods and drinks, our teeth become stained. If you’d like a bit of extra brightness in your teeth, then teeth whitening is an excellent and effective way of improving the colour of your teeth.

What is Teeth Whitening?

The teeth whitening process involves bleaching your teeth to make them brighter and whiter. The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient, but it should lighten the colour of your teeth by several shades, removing any stains that have appeared over the years. Crucially, teeth whitening does not weaken your teeth.

The treatment itself is painless, but you may experience some sensitivity after the procedure.

What Causes Teeth to Change Colour?

Our teeth change colour as we age. A number of different foods and drinks change the colour of our teeth, but major contributing factors include: smoking, tea, coffee, red wine and sugary drinks and foods.

If you limit your consumption of these, then you may find that your teeth are less likely to stain over the years. By improving your oral hygiene and cleaning your teeth after consuming these products, you may also find that your teeth do not stain as quickly, as the staining products will not sit on your teeth.

Can I Have My Teeth Whitened?

Teeth whitening is suitable for almost everyone. However, depending on the condition of your teeth, including whether you have any crowns, fillings or dentistry work, you may find that the treatment may be less effective for you.

For this reason, we recommend that you have a full dental assessment with us before deciding whether teeth whitening is right for you. Our dentists will perform an individual assessment to evaluate the options that are best suited to you and your smile.

Try Our Take Home Teeth Whitening Kits

At The Gap Dental Practice, we find that take-home teeth whitening kits are the most common and popular method of teeth whitening. Each kit is custom made for your smile, so you’re guaranteed the perfect fit and the best possible result.

With a take-home teeth whitening kit, we’ll take an impression of your teeth in order to create a custom-fitted tray. After checking for the perfect fit, you can take this tray home.

Using the tray is simple, too. All you need to do is fill the tray with gel and place it in the mouth for a specific period of time. Depending on the type of gel used, this can be for as little as one hour or as long as overnight.

This process is then repeated for a number of weeks or months, until you have the perfect smile. The rest of your oral hygiene routine will remain exactly the same and the process is painless.

Is Teeth Whitening Permanent?

Teeth whitening is a permanent change to the tooth, but after some time (usually years), your teeth may fade slightly or not be quite as bright. It’s then possible to do some more teeth whitening by purchasing additional whitening gel from your dentist.
